Areas of support

Psychologist for grief and loss

Yes, psychological support helps with grief. Therapy offers a safe space to feel and name your pain, understand the many reactions of loss, and — at your own pace — find ways to live with the absence while still honouring what mattered. Sessions are available online or in person, in Portuguese or English.

What it can look like

  • Intense sadness, longing, and waves of emotion that are hard to predict.
  • Difficulty accepting the loss, or a sense of unreality.
  • Guilt, anger or regret about what happened.
  • Withdrawal, loss of interest, or trouble returning to routine.
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or persistent fatigue.
  • Feeling 'stuck' in the pain, unable to move forward.

How I work with it

In grief, there’s nothing to “fix”. Loss is part of life, and the pain that comes with it is itself an expression of what mattered. So my work begins by holding your pain as it is — without required stages and without rushing.

From that place, and when it feels right for you, we can work on:

  • Naming and making room for emotions, including the hardest ones (guilt, anger, relief).
  • Understanding the reactions of grief and easing the fear of grieving “wrongly”.
  • Finding ways to keep a bond with the person you lost, in a way that comforts.
  • Reorganising, step by step, your routine and your sense of a future.

The goal isn’t to “forget” or “turn the page”, but to learn to live with the absence in a way that lets you go on — honouring what was, and is, important.

What to expect

  • A warm, unhurried first session to talk about who you lost and how you are.
  • A space to feel and express your pain, without judgement and without required stages.
  • Support to reorganise daily life and rebuild meaning, at your own pace.
  • In person in Aveiro or online, in Portuguese or English.

Frequently asked questions

When should I seek help with grief?
Grief is a natural reaction and doesn't always need support. Seeking help makes sense when the pain is overwhelming, lasts without relief, interferes heavily with daily life, or when you feel alone in it. There's no 'right' moment — you can reach out whenever you feel you need to.
Is there a 'normal' length for grief?
No. Grief doesn't follow a timetable or fixed stages. Each person experiences loss in their own way and at their own pace. Support respects that timing without forcing it.
Won't talking about the loss make it worse?
It's natural to fear that. In a safe space and at your own pace, naming the pain tends to ease it rather than deepen it. You're never required to talk about something you don't feel ready for.
Do you also support losses that aren't bereavement?
Yes. Grief can arise from many losses — separations, loss of health, of a life project or of an imagined future. All of them deserve to be held with care.
Do you see clients in English?
Yes, sessions can be held in Portuguese or English.
