Psychologist for depression

Yes, therapy helps with depression. Evidence-based psychological support helps you understand what keeps low mood going, gradually re-engage with what gives you meaning, and develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself — so you can recover energy and well-being in a lasting way. Sessions are available online or in person, in Portuguese or English.

What it can look like

  • Persistent sadness, emptiness, or a sense that nothing matters.
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy.
  • Tiredness and low energy, even after resting.
  • Changes in sleep and appetite (more or less than usual).
  • Harsh self-critical or guilty thoughts.
  • Difficulty concentrating, deciding, or starting simple tasks.

How I work with it

My work with depression starts from a simple idea: no one chooses to feel this way. So the starting point is always a non-judgemental welcome of whatever you’re going through.

From there, I use approaches with proven effectiveness — particularly cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and behavioural-activation strategies — adapted to you. In practice, this can include:

  • Gradually re-engaging with activities and routines that give structure and meaning.
  • Understanding and loosening harsh self-critical thoughts.
  • Working on sleep, energy and your relationship with yourself.
  • Rebuilding, step by step, your connection to people and to what matters to you.

We move at your pace. The goal isn’t to “feel better overnight”, but to recover your vitality — and the sense that your life is yours — in a lasting way.

What to expect

  • A warm first session to understand how you feel and what you need.
  • A gradual plan that respects your energy and your pace.
  • Small, concrete steps to rebuild routine, connection and meaning.
  • In person in Aveiro or online, in Portuguese or English.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if it's depression or just a hard patch?
We all go through difficult periods. We talk about depression when low mood, loss of interest and fatigue persist for most of the day, nearly every day, over weeks, and affect daily functioning. In session we carry out a careful assessment to understand what's happening and how to help.
Does therapy work without medication?
In many cases of mild to moderate depression, therapy is effective on its own. In more severe presentations, combining therapy and medication can be the most appropriate approach. Medication is always a medical decision and, if needed, I coordinate with your doctor.
I have no energy for anything. How can I do therapy?
That's precisely one of the symptoms of depression — and part of the work. We move at a realistic pace, with small, achievable steps, without demands that overwhelm you.
Is online therapy effective for depression?
Yes. Online therapy is effective and can make access easier when leaving home feels harder. You only need a private space and an internet connection.
Do you see clients in English?
Yes, sessions can be held in Portuguese or English.
